Okay, let me see if I've got this straight.
Ken Klee: 15 points in 56 games (okay, not a lot, but he's a defenseman) and a -1 rating (not great, but not terrible either - and he's a +11 for his career), gets traded to New Jersey for a guy who has played all of one NHL game at the age of 24.
They give up a draft pick to reacquire Luke Richardson, who has 7 points in 44 games and a -18 rating (-119 for his career). Not to mention that he's two years older than Klee. It's not as though they were getting rid of someone who was going to become an unrestricted free agent and who was going to leave anyway in exchange for someone with a longer-term contract - they're both becoming unrestricted free agents on July 1.
Oh, and they put Mariusz Czerkawski on waivers, and Boston snaps him up. He's scored 25 goals in a season four times in his career (30 twice, which hasn't been easy in the era of the neutral zone trap), but Pat Quinn only put him in the lineup 19 times this season, out of 61 games.
Can someone please tell me why John Ferguson, Jr. has a job? The guy has been completely clueless ever since he was hired.

Date: 2006-03-08 09:31 pm (UTC)When he signed the contract, he was worth it. I'm not so sure now.
Fortunately, they have Paul Maurice coaching the Marlies at the moment. Hopefully Quinn is hearing footsteps.
That being said, I'm still not sure that Quinn is the problem. The problems are that Ed Belfour is past it (unlike many players, the year off seems to have caused him more harm than good), Aki Berg has never seen an opposing player he didn't want to pass the puck to, and the team's medical staff thought it was a better idea not to surgically repair Eric Lindros' wrist 30 games ago, when it could have been healed in time for the playoff run.
Oh well, luckily I'm a Canadiens fan.
You know they traded Theodore to Colorado today for David Aebischer?
Personally, I don't think they needed another #1 goalie. Huet has been doing just fine (despite last night's Toronto game, but three games in four nights will tire any goalie). Unless they're worried that he's just a flash in the pan?

Date: 2006-03-09 06:32 am (UTC)Montreal for the past couple of generations has been the team with the hot goalie. Plante, Dryden, Roy, Theodore... Hell, people even thought Hackett was hot for like... a period.
Huet was doing a good job but he wasn't a star like Theodore was when he started when they pulled Hackett. And I bet that worried the GM that he wouldn't get to that level either. I saw him play against Buffalo last month and although he did a fine job (Montreal won in overtime) he was playing goal too safe.
Aebischer should make a great addition to the team, I hope.

Date: 2006-03-09 01:05 pm (UTC)I rant about Belfour's stats being below standard this year, but Belfour's 40 years old - Theodore's 29. Sure, Aebischer's a little younger (he just turned 28) and his stats are pretty impressive, but only marginally better than Theodore's.
I just don't see the point of this trade - unless both players wanted out of their respective cities, and the GMs just figured it was an even swap.
(FYI, Hackett's got a 2.39 GAA with three shutouts in 27 games for Philadelphia this year. That's hardly terrible. And looking over his career stats, I don't think it was necessarily his fault that the Canadiens missed the playoffs all those years. The two seasons when he was their #1 goalie, his GAA was 2.34 and he had eight shutouts.)

Date: 2006-03-08 10:29 pm (UTC)I'm no fan of J.F.J., but I think I see what he's getting ready to do:
1. Czerkawski was a salary dump, plain and simple. We don't need a fourth line winger making more than 1.25 million....we already have Domi.
Plus, Czerkawski wasn't doing much anyway...
2. Klee, because of his experience, was one of those steady, unremarkable players who was making a hell of a contract. (I'm pretty sure he was over 2.5 million.)
So...we lose a winger we don't use, and a steady defenseman that makes a lot of money. We save a little under $4 million, when we're pushing the salary cap... We get back a steady defenseman for practically nothing lost(5th round pick? Fine.) Richardson will take up a little under 1.9 million.
So, I think he's just shuffling things around for cap room. McCabe apparently wants to go from 3.5 to 5.25. I wonder if he's worth that much, but if J.F.J thinks so, he's just freed up the cash to sign McCabe.
Or, maybe he'll keep dumping salary. We'll probably need a goalie after this year,(sorry Eddie) and Luongo wants to sign his way out of Florida...

Czerkawski could have been doing a lot more, if Quinn would have just put him into the lineup. You don't throw away a 25-to-30 goal scorer, especially when the league has modified its rules to generate more goals. And at $500,000, he could have been a bargain.

Steady but unremarkable is better than being unsteady. Richardson may have had a couple of good years when he was with Edmonton, but I still remember his first tour of duty with the Leafs. *shudder*
Personally I would have gotten rid of Berg before Klee.
According to this site (http://www.hockeyzoneplus.com/search/salaries-search.cgi?template=nhl-salaries-search-detail.htm&dbname=NHL-Salaries-test.txt&key2=242&action=searchdbdisplay), Klee is making $1,900,000, and Berg $1,064,000.

Good point there. I do think McCabe is worth as much as Kaberle, and since they're going to be paying Kaberle something like 5 million next year, McCabe has to get that too.

Another good point about Belfour; I think he's done. I hadn't heard that Luongo wanted out of Florida, though. Hmmm.

Date: 2006-03-09 12:19 am (UTC)You're probably right on their salaries. I've had the habit of thinking in terms of their old salaries. ;)
And yeah, Czerkawski had potential written all over him. I was at first hopeful that he'd play at the level of his past. I'm just frustrated that it isn't panning out.
Roberto has apparently rejected two offers, each in the 5-6 year range for 5-6 million per year. I'm not sure of the whole story, but that implies to me that he won't sign with them for any money.

Date: 2006-03-09 07:30 am (UTC)Czerkawski makes little sense to me either as he has nothing but room to grow. Maybe they think they've already got all the hotshot young guns they need in Wellwood, Steen and Stajan. *shrug* It's also possible he just didn't gel with the team...it's been looking like a mess out there with all the lineup changes, and they haven't had great luck with all these line changes.
As for the Goalie question, I'd frankly like to see them give the job to Telqvist. He's got the skills, all he really needs is some more experience and a bit tougher nerves, both of which will only come with more time between the pipes. Sure the first year with him as the main goalie would be rough but I'm pretty sure he's up to the task, and I'd wager Pat Quinn thinks so too, otherwise he wouldn't have practically doubled his number of games over the previous season.
Frankly I think JFJ should just eat crow, admit he fucked up with Lindros and O'Neill (both had flashy starts and have amounted to fuck all in the last few months) and just dump them and the salary they're eating up for either more young prospects, or a couple guys that are actually reliable.
