I learned something at work today.

There I was, writing a 400+ line SQL procedure to split the Chinese language code into two separate codes for Mandarin and Cantonese (I had to update the data in about a dozen tables, hence the massive procedure), and I thought, "hmm, I'd better go to the ISO website and get the correct abbreviations." A couple of Google searches later, and I came across the IANA language subtag registry. I started scrolling down, and came across:

Type: grandfathered
Tag: i-klingon
Description: Klingon
Added: 1999-05-26
Preferred-Value: tlh
Deprecated: 2004-02-24
Comments: replaced by ISO code tlh

Yeah, Klingon has its own ISO language code. I couldn't help but crack up, and then I had to explain what was so funny...

(And now, if you'll excuse me, I have Polaris work to do... as if I didn't already know I was a big geek. ;) )

Yeah, it would be funny to see if our client spots it in the list. ;)

So long as we didn't inadvertantly upload it to our production database... the Internet is for Serious Business. ;)

(Well, in this case, since our site is an employment site for teachers, it would probably be a bad thing if we put Klingon on our live site.)

One of these days, Lance, we're gonna do a geek intervention on you!

I think you're going to have to make it a joint geek intervention with me too.

If I had a digital camera, it would be no problem. I'll try to arrange to get a picture taken just for you.

That reminds me...

I was playing Cranium (an awesome board game that combines trivia, Pictionary, and charades) with some friends and my team's question was something along the lines of: Which of these says "(whatever the phrase was)" in (a certain language)?"

... and of course, choice #4 looks something like this:

nuqDaq 'oH puchpa''e'

And the first words out of my mouth are, "Well, I know it's not #4 because that's Klingon."

It's good to be a geek. ;P

LOL!

I don't believe I've ever played Cranium. It sounds like fun.

Have you ever played Taboo? I used to play it all the time with my ex-husband. The weirdest point I ever got was when the person with the die rolled "K", and one of the items we had to fill in was "Bad Habits". I wrote "Kicking old ladies." *grin*

(Well, if one had it as a habit, it would be a bad one...)

My friends and I have been playing Cranium for a number of years now. It's a great party game.

As for Taboo... I've heard of it, but I've never played. Sounds like the kind of thing I would enjoy though! ;P

I really shouldn't post comments at 2 in the morning...

I described Scattergories, not Taboo. Taboo is a completely different game. It's like Password, except there are words you're not allowed to use.

One time a bunch of us were playing Taboo, and I got the word "underdog". I thought, "Hey, I'll just sing the theme song to the animated series," but I inadvertantly sang the Mighty Mouse theme instead... and one of my teammates still got it. *grin*
