I hate my printer. I'm trying to print out the passport renewal forms, but I don't print stuff all that often, and the nozzles seem to be clogged every time, so everything comes out illegible. Nine pages of garbage.

Mind you, it was given to me for free, so I can't complain (well, obviously I can, and have :) ). And when I do unclog the nozzles, it tends to work fine (if painfully slowly).

Now I have to find somewhere to get photos taken. I know there's a place downtown near where I used to work, but that's no help. I think there's a camera store a few minutes' walk north of where I work - I'll have to pop in there at lunch tomorrow and see if they do passport photos (I think most camera places do, no?).

It's my own stupid fault - I kept thinking to myself, "I must renew my passport before going to Dragon*Con," but I would never remember to actually print the forms until after I'd shut off my computer and gone to bed, or when I was out somewhere. Fortunately the government website says that if I take them to the office in person, I can get my passport back within two weeks. (I may have to get to the office at oh-dark-thirty in the morning to be reasonably certain of not having to wait in line, admittedly.)

And yes, all this passport renewal talk means that my birthday is coming up soon. Painfully soon. I don't normally talk about it (in fact, I was considering not talking about it at all) because I don't like acknowledging my birthday - the last one I went out of my way to do something about turned out to be a huge disappointment. Not that I'm bitter, if you know what I mean. ;) But it occurs to me that this one is kind of big. So I'm thinking that maybe I should do something a little special a week from this Saturday, which would be August 11. Problem is, I have a TCON Board of Directors meeting the next day (my actual birthday, but going out on a Sunday night is probably a bad idea), so it would probably be a good idea to have sobered up by then. ;)

So here's where I ask you, my friendslist, for input. Those of you who are in or near Toronto (unless you're willing to travel the requisite number of hours and/or cross the requisite number of oceans or borders to help me mourn turning 40) let me know if you'd be interested in a night on the town with me. I don't know what I want to do yet, though dinner would certainly be a part of it. Alcohol would be another part of it, I'm sure. (Getting sufficiently liquored up to enter the Best Legs Contest at Woody's might be amusing, if this were to happen on the Saturday night... hell, getting sufficiently liquored up to enter the Best Ass Contest on the Friday night would be even more amusing. Or possibly nauseating.) Maybe karaoke? Cosmic bowling? (Hm, I should probably get a session in before the new season starts in a month, though cosmic bowling probably isn't the best way to do that.)

Any suggestions?

what is cosmic bowling?

It's bowling in the dark, with glow-in-the-dark pins and balls (though last time I went, I brought my own, regular ball with me). Usually loud music is played, and it usually takes place late in the evenings on weekends.

Well, I wouldn't be able to make it up there for that particular night, however I'd be more than glad to treat you to a drink when you're down here for Dragon*Con (Is it already that time of year?).

I wouldn't have expected you to. ;)

It is (hence my passport issues), and I'd be more than happy to take you up on that offer. :)

Assuming I'm not booked for that night (which could be, I've got a few gigs in the next month), I'd be in for shenanigans.

Hm. I like the sound of "shenanigans". I may use that as the name of the event when I put out the invite for the benefit of my Facebook friends who aren't on LJ. :)

Anyway, I just posted a tentative plan, so have a look.

I'm still working on ideas for "the festival that is Emma's 30th birthday", which has turned into a ten-day thing, starting with "the last week of Emma's twenties" and ending with a Tori Amos concert.

And the reason I'm making such a big freaking deal out of this birthday (and last year's), is not even so much that they're big numbers, but I was disappointed and royally hosed on my 28th. Not that *I'm* still bitter. ;)

So I get where you're coming from. I don't have any ideas to share, but I'll be there to celebrate with you. I shall not assist in any mourning, but if you want to spend a few moments being not bitter, I'm so there.

But I wanted to let you know that you can get passport forms at the post office (like the one in the Y&E mall), and skip your printer woes.

Ten days? Oy. It's the birthday party to end all birthday parties. :)

Anyway the plan (so far) has been posted...

I wish I'd seen this before I went to all that trouble. The problem was, the timing was kind of tight - I had asked [livejournal.com profile] theengineer to sign the forms for me, and I was seeing him Thursday night. I had to run around to get my pictures done on my lunch break, and never had time to stop in at the post office. Argh. (But I'll remember that for next time.)

Gah - I'm going to be out of the country, or I could make the trip...

If you enter the contest, there better be pictures, babe.*G*

It's a shame you won't be there - it would be nice to see you. :)

As for pictures... well, they don't allow pictures to be taken of the contestants during the various contests. Otherwise, being a big attention whore and all, I'm sure I'd post them all over the Net for everyone to see and mock. ;)

First thing, if you take your passport in, no matter what time you go, you'll be waiting in line. The trick is to go knowing that. I waited about 45 minutes, and paid for expedited service and got my passport back in five days. And I even had someone else pick it up for me -- I wrote them a letter, and they walked in with the letter, and the passport people nicely gave it to them. Worked well.

As for your birthday, I'd love to help you celebrate. Dinner is good, alcohol is fine... beyond that, pick whatever sounds fun to you at the time. I am slowly reclaiming my birthday as my birthday (and not the day my stepfather went to the hospital to die), so I completely understand the suckage that can surround birthdays.

Hm, I didn't know you could do that.

I was planning on paying the extra as well, though it looks now like I'll be going by land with [livejournal.com profile] kairi_kiss and whoever else is in that vehicle, so not having a current passport probably wouldn't be a big deal. Still, I want to have it with me.

When my cousin applied for her passport she did the online option and showed up super early. Doing it online meant she got put in a special short line because she was already in the system. So I would take that option if you can.

As for the tassles - well, if we round out the evening with dancing at Tallulah's apparently Donnarama is performing at some point. Do you really want a drag queen to get pissy with you for being flashier than she is? ;)

Once you get the details down pat, let us know what's happening via e-mail. We might already have a commitment on that day...whatever day you're thinking of. August is horrendously busy for us.

Agreed, once details are in, let me know. (I'm on the portal.)

As for ideas, cosmic bowl - although I remember it being called glo-bowl - sounds fun. Dinner sounds fun, but I won't be drinking that much - I don't drink that much usually anyways. (I think the last time I was anywhere near drunk was the Thursday night in Harry's Bar before either TT19 or 20.)

Besides, bowling sounds inexpensive - I'm trying to keep as much of my meager funds back for Yokohama later this month.

Well, I'm not big on the "hurling heavy objects in the dark" idea, but I'll come watch. Or drink. Or dance in a nice gay bar. Let me know.

From: [identity profile] boywhocantsayno.livejournal.com
The plan is up! I changed my mind about the bowling, so don't worry about the heavy objects in the dark. (They do make lighter bowling balls, you know... seven or eight pounds. They're not all 16-pound behemoths like the ones my teammate Mario uses.)

Besides, with the new plan involving karaoke at Fiddler's Green, maybe you can regale us all with something from Rent. ;)
