Damn it, this is the third time I've tried to post this... Firefox keeps shutting down on me every time I try to start a post. Hopefully the third time is the charm...

First, bowling: I had a decent night, with scores of 198, 154 and 159, and we won all three games. [livejournal.com profile] h8torun was declaring her scores tonight, so it's good that she was over her average in all three games. Once again, however, we were the last ones out despite the fact that Mario was away tonight. The other team seemed to have a small problem realizing when it was their turn to bowl, which may have been the main contribution to the issue. Though the second-last group to finish included a rather cute guy named Spencer (who has a bf, alas), so I had some eye candy while I was stuck there to the bitter end. :) Randy had the car tonight, so he gave me a ride to the subway.

The painkillers seem to be working - my arm was just starting to get sore toward the end of the night, but nowhere near as bad as it has been. (I had tentative plans to go out with [livejournal.com profile] cuteteenboy tonight, but this time I had to call and cancel as I'm not supposed to drink with these painkillers. Dagnab it.)

I tried calling the recruiter again today to find out what's happening with the job I interviewed for (three weeks ago, now), but again, got her voicemail. I keep hoping that this indicates that they're still making up their minds, rather than that she's avoiding me.

And now some miscellaneous links from other folks on my LJ:

  • From [livejournal.com profile] evawhitley: The Baptist Bulletin is on their high horse about gay marriage. In what I take to be an ironic typo, they refer to the third state to legalize civil unions (and about which I saw nothing on my friendslist despite the fact that it happened this week - what's up, folks?) as "Jew Jersey". I'm pretty sure that's an innocent typo, though, as they got it right further down.

  • From [livejournal.com profile] defenestr8or, apparently the Polish president thinks that acceptance of homosexuality will lead to the end of the human race. Someone ought to tell him that legalizing same-sex marriage doesn't make it mandatory...

  • From [livejournal.com profile] montrealais, another publicly-homophobic Baptist minister has been caught soliciting a man for gay sex. Unfortunately for him, it was an undercover police officer. The lawyer is claiming that the minister has a Constitutional right to solicit for sex. I can't speak to that point, but there may be laws in Oklahoma against solicitation.

  • From [livejournal.com profile] chase820, there are full-frontal pictures of Daniel Radcliffe rehearsing for the upcoming production of Equus. Speculation is, however, that the picture at that link has been Photoshopped. Let's not have any jokes about Harry Potter's wand, 'mkay? *grin*

And courtesy of a comment by [livejournal.com profile] sarcasm_hime on [livejournal.com profile] sandwichboy's LJ, I present to you a preview of the upcoming series Blood Ties, based on the Tanya Huff novels:

Apparently it's not being aired in Canada until the fall, however. *sigh*

Oh, and if you want a chuckle, check out Conservapedia, the right-wing version of Wikipedia. I particularly enjoyed the edits the page on the United States has been undergoing recently, though it still needs a couple of tweaks. Some pages strike me as being more bloglike than encyclopedic, though - when I searched for the page on the U.S., I saw listings for things like Should the United States Have Entered WWI? (that one made me laugh) and Should the United States Have Entered WWII? (still not encyclopedic, but a teensy bit more worthwhile than the previous one, if you ignore comments like "At this moment we could be speaking German and not be celebrating Christmas the Christian way!"). I don't think I'll be giving up on Wikipedia just yet...

It seems David Hasselhoff is performing in the Las Vegas production of The Producers... as Roger deBris, the cross-dressing director of Springtime For Hitler.

What makes it worse is that there are pictures of the Hoff in drag.

Here's one, which I have mercifully placed behind a cut. Don't blame me if you click it. )

Eek.

It seems that some photos of Daniel Radcliffe in the upcoming West End production of Equus have been posted, and parents are already in a tizzy about it. This Is London features quotes from a couple of parents:

One said: 'We as parents feel Daniel should not appear nude. Our nine-year-old son looks up to him as a role model. We are very disappointed and will avoid the future movies he makes.'

Role model? This contrasts nicely with the uberChristian parents who think that Harry Potter will turn their children into Satanists, I suppose... unless this production is all part of Ze Zecret Mazter Plan.

Another wrote: 'I am curious as to how and why his parents said this was okay.'

Um... because he's an actor? And because this is a well-regarded play? And because it might just help prevent him from being typecast for the rest of his career?

The production's producer is quoted as saying, "Equus is on the school syllabus and I would never stipulate what age people should be to see it." To that, I have two comments:

  1. Seeing a play performed is probably the best way to study it.

  2. If a parent feels this play is inappropriate, then the answer is simple - don't let your kids see it!

Okay, not every parent exerts that much control over what their kids see. And I don't think that kids will be damaged for life from seeing Daniel Radcliffe naked (trust me, from what I understand*, there are much more disturbing things in this particular play than a little nudity). But try doing your own parenting instead of expecting someone else to do it for you. Sheesh.

Interestingly, though, Randy Harrison recently performed the same role on Broadway. I know a lot of Queer As Folk fans went to see the production because of his role, including a lot of teenage girls who watched QAF. I don't recall a big hue and cry about that.

* - I admit, I've never actually read the play. I should probably rectify that.

I was trying to find online proof for [livejournal.com profile] saintrobert that my haircut in 1991-2 was not a "permed mullet". Lo and behold, the Imprint (the University of Waterloo's student paper) has uploaded PDFs of past issues...

Here's the link to the issue in which this appeared, along with a review of the production of Edward II for which this was taken. The article is on the bottom of page 18. It may be slow downloading.

Scary, innit?

(Edit: for those of you who have never actually met me, I'm on the left.)

Long day.

I just got home from seeing "Sweeney Todd" in Hamilton with [livejournal.com profile] hi_co (thanks for the rides!), [livejournal.com profile] elizard100 (thanks for inviting me!), [livejournal.com profile] redeem147, [livejournal.com profile] rosemary_ca, [livejournal.com profile] yellow_freshia, and [livejournal.com profile] pann_da_bear. I was to meet [livejournal.com profile] hi_co and [livejournal.com profile] redeem147 at the Chapters across from Mississauga's Square One shopping mall between 5 and 5:30, but didn't think I was going to make it in time. I had to go out to Parkdale to pick up a bunch of computer books that [livejournal.com profile] thespian had gotten for me (thanks again!) and drop off Gaylaxicon flyers, which wasn't a huge problem. However, getting out to Mississauga proved to be an adventure. I got on the 504 streetcar marked "Dundas West Station via King" but when the driver got to Roncesvalles, the streetcar magically turned into a "Roncesvalles & Queen" car and I had to get out. The next streetcar to come was also turning back, and eventually a bus showed up. I got to the subway and rode to Islington, where I had to choose a Mississauga Transit bus to take to Square One. They don't call it "Mississauga Chance-It" for nothing! The first bus to arrive was number 3; I got on and asked the driver whether taking this bus or one of the others would be faster. He didn't know. (WTF?) So I got on and arrived at Chapters at about 5:25. Phew!

We went for dinner at this restaurant whose name escapes me across the street from the theatre, where I had an excellent linguine chicken primavera. We then went to the show. Apparently it was a youth troupe (someone said it was a high school troupe), but they were very good, all things considered. Alas, "Sweeney Todd" is one of those Sondheim shows whose score I don't have memorized - with Sondheim, sometimes it's hard to follow the lyrics because his lyrics are so extremely intricate, sung in strange time signatures, and with multiple singers singing different lyrics - and even tunes - in counterpoint to each other. That being said, however, I loved the show. I was surprised to see that the performers were miked, though... the theatre wasn't that large.

Afterwards, we retired to the "Cat and Fiddle", a local pub for dessert and drinks. I had a slice of the most decadent carrot cake I've had in years and a pint of Mick's Red. I said I wasn't going to log on when I got home, but forgot that I had already turned my computer on before I went out this afternoon, and found over 200 emails waiting for me...

So, now that the fun is over for tonight, I'm off to get some work done.
