I got home about half an hour ago from the "Queer As Folk" prop, costume and set piece sale in Mississauga. It wasn't nearly as crowded as I thought it would be, but it was still fairly well attended. I didn't really get to spend much time with Yvonne, but Patti and I browsed a fair bit together.

I hadn't really intended on spending a lot of money - I only took $80 with me, but then Patti offered to run out to a bank machine and loan me some more. So I ended up spending $140. But I think it was worth it; I got:

  • two of Emmett's shirts ($20 and $25)

  • a T-shirt from Kinnetix, the ad agency Brian Kinney set up in S4 ($10)

  • four pieces of Justin's art, including storyboards for the "Rage" comic book ($15 each) - I think one of the pieces is the panel where, as Justin described it, "J.T. revives Rage with a blow job", but I'll have to rewatch the episode to make sure

  • and the piece de resistance... regular viewers of the show may remember that in S4, Justin went to Hollywood to visit with Brett Keller, the movie producer who was interested in buying the movie rights to "Rage". In one episode (either 4x13 or 4x14), Brett shows Justin some mockups for poster art advertising the "Rage" film, with the names "Cruise", "Depp" and "Kutcher" above the image of Rage's face and the title of the film. Well, I'm now the proud owner of the "Cruise" artwork. It seems to have suffered a little water damage, but hey, it was $15.

I'd considered getting a jacket that Emmett wore as well, but I didn't take it off the rail while I was waiting for Patti to return from the bank machine, and someone snapped it up while I wasn't paying attention. It was only $40. :( (Well, if I'd gotten that, I wouldn't have been able to afford the shirts I bought. And it looked a little tight for me, though Emmett's shirts weren't. Yes, I stood there in the middle of this warehouse and stripped off my shirt to try it on. Hey, someone stood out in the open and tried on a pair of leather pants...)

While we were in line to pay, I noticed a beautiful full-length brown leather coat that someone had abandoned (a lot of people seemed to be giving up while already in line to pay, and were leaving their purchases where they were when they left). Just as I noticed it, so did someone else. It was $60. $60 for a full-length leather coat!!! I remember buying one for Joe for Christmas ten years ago, and I think I paid something like $300. If only I had more money, and had noticed it three seconds earlier... :(

They had some pretty amazing stuff there. A flat-screen television for $300. Literally hundreds of lamps. Dildoes. (No, I didn't buy one. :P ) Drag outfits by the dozen. (No, I didn't buy any of those either. :P ) More furniture and rugs than one could ever use: bureaus, tables, chairs, wardrobes. Neon signs (including the one for Moosey's, which was used when they redressed Woody's for the episode set in Toronto). More artwork. Kitchenware. Brian's mockups for ad campaigns (including Poolboy Coolers featuring a very hot young guy in a Speedo - larger than life-size). They were even selling sidewalk newspaper boxes and racks, including some that we're not sure actually belonged to the production (one was for eye magazine, a local entertainment weekly). Heck, they were even selling the Big Q employees' nametags (most were $5, but Michael's were $25).

Now I just need to figure out where to hang my newly acquired artwork... after all, it needs to be well hung. ;)

Edited to add: at one point I approached a woman working there to ask her how much the "Cruise/Rage" poster was, as there was no price on it. She noticed the other art I was carrying and asked, "big fan, eh?" I replied, "Yes, I even tried to put together a convention a couple of years ago but it didn't work out." She said, "I remember you - that was going to be at the Marriott, right? What happened?" Wow. I'm famous in the production offices for chairing an event that fell through because the actors wouldn't commit...

So I guess they didn't have a bargain priced Fab Filippo then? We could have dual purposed him as a Buffy guest for TT. :-)

Hee. I wish. Actually, I was looking for the portrait of Ethan that Justin drew, but didn't see it. It was probably there, I just didn't have the patience to go through that pile. Plus, a lot of the pieces in that section were being damaged by the other browsers, as they were just on ordinary paper, and were lying out on the table unprotected. :(

FWIW, I still have his phone number... ;) (Though I expect he's no longer at that number. It was three years ago or so, after all.)

Sounds like you got some good paraphenalia there, the sort of thing that a die-hard fan would really enjoy owning.

I think so too. Though I shudder to think what I might have gotten if I were employed. Patti and Yvonne would both have had to ferry stuff multiple times. In a U-haul. ;)

I'm particularly happy about the artwork, because it's one-of-a-kind. There are two other Rage movie posters, but only one of them has Tom Cruise's name on it. And the storyboards are unique.

I wish I had a digital camera so that I could post photos to show everyone on my flist... I might be able to post an image next week, as the S4 DVD boxset comes out on Tuesday. If I can do a screencap, I can post an image.

All things should be well hung. Or at least look good while hanging.

Gratz on the cool stuff. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I came out with a black Gap jacket and nothing else. I should embroider in it "I went to a QAF prop sale and all I got was this jacket."

My mother did get one of Melanie's lesbian jackets though. Looked good.
