What week is it, again?

lance_sibleyIt turned out my suspicion was correct - Mike is coming over next Friday. I did the same thing with the date of the Toronto Trek concom meeting - I thought it was this Sunday for a while. Gah. The days are blending into each other; if it weren't for my bowling league being on Wednesdays, I wouldn't know what freaking day it was. (Well, getting the newspaper delivered six days a week helps too, though I don't always look at the date.)
After checking with Mike, I made a few job search-related phone calls; I called the new manager at Manulife and asked if we could meet over coffee or some such, because I didn't know whether she knew the circumstances behind my leaving and wanted to see about possibly returning. She said she knew some of what had happened, but not all, so I gave her a quick overview. She said that she would be open to rehiring me, except that they're actually cutting back budgetwise and getting rid of all of their consultants right now. However, she asked me to email her my contact info and she will let me know if anything comes up. As aggravating as I found working there to be, at least I now know what to expect in that environment and can prepare myself to deal with it.
I then called the W5 headhunter who's trying to get me into TD, and he still hadn't heard anything from them. Grrr. However, we had an extended chat and he suggested that I tweak my resume to de-emphasize my technical experience, as he feels that I have enough experience to get a position as a business systems analyst. Apparently there are more openings these days in that area. He discouraged me from trying to move into web development as while I'd be willing to take a more junior position in that area, most companies hire directly from the graduating classes of colleges and universities. Apparently agencies get very little in the way of junior-level positions to be filled. So I'll try to get that done sometime this weekend too. He was very helpful and sent me some sample resumes from other clients. The catch is, I actually enjoy the hands-on technical development side.
On another topic, something worrying happened this morning. I didn't get to bed until about 6 this morning, and the fire alarm went off at 11. I'm a little worried because I couldn't even dredge up the energy to get out of bed. I thought to myself, "it's probably a false alarm" - which it was - but I don't know why I didn't feel any urgent need to get out of the building given that the last time the alarm went off, it was actually a fire caused by someone leaving a pot on the stove and falling asleep. I don't know if that's a sign of depression, apathy or just that I was still half-asleep...
My mother wants me to call sometime this weekend. Ick. (I had to call her because I didn't have the Manulife manager's phone number, and her company is owned by Manulife/John Hancock so I figured she would have access to the number I needed.) I suspect that she wants to arrange a meeting with my grandmother's lawyer - which is fine, but I dread the continuation of the arguments around my grandmother's will. However, I plan to stand firm.
Hopefully I'll be able to get everything done that I want to in the next 20 minutes or so, so that I can go out and meet![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)

I kind of want to go out, but don't want to, all at the same time... because there's a TT message board pubnight tomorrow night, I know I won't be home to get my other online stuff done, and I don't want to leave it until Sunday because it'll all just pile up... then again, the Enterprise forum at TrekBBS isn't really worth visiting this week. It's been chock full of locked duplicate threads about the cancellation of Enterprise, and that's just depressing. And Miscellaneous is nothing but masturbation threads lately, it seems. (Though I admit that hasn't stopped me from contributing...)
Speaking of which, I enjoyed tonight's episode, though not as much as last week's.
The teaser, showing the Romulan marauder coming under attack from Tucker and Reed's perspective was fairly run-of-the-mill until the end, when the external view showed that the marauder's holographic projectors were disguising the ship as the Enterprise. I thought that was a cool touch.
It was a pity Talas did not survive her injuries, but it gave Jeffrey Combs a chance to chew the scenery. :) There were some interesting references to Andorian being an ice world - perhaps Manny Coto and the rest of the writers are actually trying to incorporate non-canon sources such as the FASA gaming materials to try to tie everything together into a coherent whole. It was a nice touch. (So long as they don't start claiming that the Andorians have mysterious "ice powers", all is good.)
While Archer's solution to the fight-to-the-death with Shran was novel, it came out of nowhere. Much like in TNG's "The Ensigns Of Command", where Picard announces that he has chosen the Grizzellas to negotiate a disagreement once they awaken from their hibernation cycle, the fact that merely rendering the opponent unable to continue the combat by cutting off an antenna came out of left field. However, it was nice to see that Archer almost got his butt kicked. Not every Starfleet captain is a hand-to-hand combat expert... especially when using alien weapons.
I do like the fact that they're continuing to show the start of the process that will lead to the formation of the Federation by having the Andorians, Tellarites, Vulcans and humans form an alliance against the Romulan marauder.
Alas, the threat by the Romulan commander to irradiate Trip was fairly paing-by-numbers. Ho hum, we know he's going to get out of it somehow... not to mention that it didn't make a whole lot of sense for the Romulan to be able to communicate with them in real time. The marauder was in what will eventually be Federation territory, and he was on Romulus, yet was able to communicate by using regular subspace. It would have made more sense if he had used the same equipment that was being used to control the ship, and perhaps have the Aenar pilot transmit his messages.
The ending of the episode, with Tucker and Reed jumping out an airlock to escape the Romulan ship, was very cool, I thought. "Need a lift?" indeed. The revelation of the Aenar as the pilot of the marauder would have had more impact had I been more studious about avoiding spoilers. :)
Oh, and did anyone else notice the two Reman guards? Nice bit of continuity with "Nemesis", there.

Date: 2005-02-05 02:15 am (UTC)What I love about computers is working through the operating system to find bugs, hunting down what the probbale error might be, trying new things to get it to work. If it's a hardware problem, opening the case, swapping out components, working out what the problem is and how to get around it.
And then they dumb down the guts, and they simplify the software troubleshooting, and I found myself with a choice of learning programming/analysis (so not my cup of tea), or getting out of the biz altogether.
So now I'm an admin assistant and, ironically, making more than I did when I was a computer tech. Not as much fun, but it pays the bills and gives me time to have a life.
I don't know if that's a sign of depression, apathy or just that I was still half-asleep...
Could be any/all. If this is the only thing that's happeend recently to make you think depression, it's probably not that. If it's a recurring trend, and you aren't getting anything done, then you need to look into it more, and get some help. Because you don't deserve to go through that. *hugs*
