James Doohan, Scotty on "Star Trek", passed away this morning at the age of 85.

I never got a chance to meet Mr. Doohan - I was not at the Toronto Trek where he was a guest, and I missed the chance a couple of years ago when he was at SFX, though I saw him from a distance as he was signing autographs. One always thinks there will be another opportunity.

I'm grateful, though, that I was able to play some small role in getting him his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as his son Chris got my email address from somewhere (probably the Torcon 3 website) and contacted me (and many others) when he started his campaign, and I passed his email around. (Oddly, last night I was deleting the huge backlog of emails I had read but left in my Inbox, and Chris' email was still in there.)

It's a crying shame that he still doesn't have a star on the Canadian Walk Of Fame. I would encourage all of my Canadian friends to write to their board, and nominate him. Heck, even if you're not Canadian, you may still be able to nominate. I'm not sure.

Rest in peace, Mr. Doohan.

I finally got around to going downtown to buy new shoes today. My old Rockports split open a few months ago, when I was wandering around Kensington Market with [livejournal.com profile] cuteteenboy one day, and I kept putting off replacing them. There's a Rockport store in the Eaton Centre, so I got a new pair there today. (I wear Rockports at the recommendation of the chiropodist I saw a few years ago about my plantar fasciitis - they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn.)

On the way there, I stopped off at the ticket booth at Yonge and Dundas to say hi to Michael - he'd brought his dog to work today. For some reason I'd envisioned the dog as being big and yappy (hey, his name is Shatner), but he's the most adorable beagle puppy. He leaped at my leg at one point and wrapped his front paws around it - fortunately he's not old enough to know about leg-humping yet, though. We chatted for about half an hour or so, and I caught him up on what he missed at TT this weekend. He asked me if I was planning on going out to karaoke any time soon - I hadn't been, but I suppose I could have my arm twisted. ;) It seems, however, that he's not available Friday, and I have tentative plans to go out on Saturday night. (Hm, I don't think the ticket booth is open on Mondays, so he might be open to going out Sunday night...)

After buying shoes, I decided to go book shopping. I'd been meaning to pick up Joe Haldeman's Forever Peace and Forever Free for some time - pity I didn't get around to it before meeting him in Boston a few weeks ago. I also got Jasper Fforde's Something Rotten and Warren Dunford's The Scene Stealer. There's a new Fforde out, but they only had the British edition and I'm anal-retentive enough about books to want to wait for the North American edition. The cover art on the British editions is much more interesting, but this being the first time I'd ever seen them, all I have is the North American editions. I want my bookshelf to look somewhat non-haphazard. (And everyone who's been in my apartment scoffs.) As for the Dunford, he writes light gay humour of the type that I enjoy - plus he lives and sets his books in Toronto, so I actually know the landmarks, which makes reading him even more fun.
