That was tiring.
Apr. 13th, 2007 11:24 pmI got to the bowling alley around 6:30 tonight, and was surprised to find that I was the last person from my team to arrive. Mario and Randy don't usually get there until 6:45 or even later.
Tonight was the start of the league playoffs, in which the league is divided into two groups - the championship round, for teams that finished in the top 12, and the consolation, for everyone else. We were something like 9th overall, so we got into the championship round. Progression from there is not based on head-to-head scores, unlike in most sports - instead, you're competing against every other team in your round. After next week, the top 7 from each session (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday) then go on to the finals on April 29.
We didn't actually start until about 7:20 because individual high score trophies had to be handed out - they stopped handing those out at the banquet a few years ago, allegedly in the interest of saving time.
The first game was acceptable, if not brilliant - we were in 7th place, with a score somewhere around 1070. For the second game, we were "sharing" the pair of lanes with the ghost team (since there were only 27 teams in the Friday session this year), so we had to pace ourselves. Normally, a score of 1100 is very good - and we managed 1190, which vaulted us into first overall. The third game was a bit of a struggle, but we finished very strongly and ended up with 1103 (I hadn't thought we were going to break 1050, much less 1100), and we held on to first place by about ten pins. My personal scores for the night: 157, 228, 172. I'm happy - and my arm doesn't even hurt (that much). It was getting sore in the first game, but all those strikes I got in the second game meant that I wasn't putting as much strain on it as usual. :)
Apparently if we finish in the top three we automatically get trophies regardless of how we do in the finals, so here's hoping we manage to hang on. It would be the first time I've gotten a team trophy in this league (I got a clock about eight years ago for finishing in the top 25 averages).
I confirmed tonight that the final is on the same day as the proposed new date for the Polaris Programming Department's meeting where we edit the panel listings for the programme book. I jokingly suggested that, since we're looking for a place to meet, the department could meet in the area near the snack bar where they have several tables, and I could run over between frames to debate em-dashes versus semicolons. ;)
Part of me was thinking about going out tonight, but I'm not sure. My cold isn't anywhere near as bad as it was yesterday, but I'm still stuffed up, and tired, and sore. I can't go out tomorrow night, though, as I have to be up no later than 9 to get to my meeting by 11 on Sunday morning. What to do, what to do...
