Long day today. Had to get up at 9:30 (on about 4.5 hours' sleep) to meet Craig from TT at Don Mills station, to help transport a bunch of ugly green curved dividers to the storage locker. Got back home around 12 or 12:30 or something and vegged on the couch until I was able to rouse myself to go downtown to Word On The Street. I would have gotten there earlier had I known that it had been moved from Queen Street up to Queen's Park (for non-locals, despite the similar names, they're not really that close to each other, though it's walkable). Got there, found the Merril Collection's table and discovered that they were almost out of Gaylaxicon flyers. Either that, or they hadn't put them all out. Either is possible, as I'd given them about 500 and the estimated attendance this year was 200,000 people.

Stopped at the Ryerson booth and picked up a continuing education calendar. They have certificate programs in object-oriented programming, which seem to be the kind of thing I'm looking for. Only problem is that many of the classes seem to be three-hour sessions on Wednesday nights.

Laughed my ass off at the booth where they were selling "Freudian slippers." They looked comfy.

Wandered up to the SFWA table, where I saw Robert J. Sawyer, his wife Carolyn, Carolyn's brother David, [livejournal.com profile] chanilye and Janet from Ad Astra. Chatted for a bit, then wandered off to browse some more. On the way back down, about half an hour before closing, I was passing the Penguin Books booth when a voice rang out over the crowd: "Everything on the table - one dollar!" I ended up getting two hardcovers - Gorgon, a book about paleontology in Africa, and a biography of Tony Blair. Don't ask why. But hey, they were only a dollar each, and they'll probably be interesting reads.

Came home, made dinner, watched some Firefly ("Serenity" - the episode, not the movie, just to be clear) while eating it, and then watched the season premiere of Desperate Housewives. I really ought to watch the season one episodes I hadn't seen, though - it seems like there's a lot happening that I'm not aware of. I did enjoy the scenes between Bree and Rex's mother. Funny, Rex's mother reminded me of someone I know... hm. Though I don't think I'm nearly as anal retentive as Bree. (Hush.) And the business with Betty Applewhite's husband is interesting. Looks like another warped storyline coming up. Fun.

After that, I did some more TT work, and now I'm going to pop into TrekBBS and see whether a new record has been set for the number of threads dedicated to the argument about whether or not being gay is a choice. *facepalm*

I hope to be able to get to bed at a decent hour tonight. (HA!) Might get rid of the headache I've had all day. Can't figure out why I have said headache, because I only had two beers last night. Maybe if I get some decent sleep I'll also be able to start posting in complete sentences again.

Oh... new icon, created by [livejournal.com profile] brokenelevator for the [livejournal.com profile] queerasfolkfans community. Which I'm getting tired of reading; for the record, one reminder that the Martha Stewart movie, starring Gale Harold, was on tonight should have been sufficient. Eight reminders are overkill.

Yeah, yeah... I know it's a meme.

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] brendan_moody (with one change to the wording of #8):

Top Ten Reasons Against Gay Marriage

  1. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

  2. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

  3. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behaviour. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

  4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

  5. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

  6. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

  7. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

  8. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in Canada.

  9. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

  10. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

Please post this in your journal if you are for gay marriage.
