Well, for me, at least...
First things first: we've confirmed, much to my chagrin, that Toronto Trek's panelist signup web page isn't working again. If anyone reading this has signed up to be a panelist but hasn't heard from us, please email us at programming@tcon.ca. If you can forward the confirmation email you received at signup to us, that would help. If not, just email us and let us know that you haven't been contacted.
Edited to add: I almost forgot, we have a new guest to announce! Corin Nemec, who played Jonas Quinn on Stargate SG-1, will be joining us at Toronto Trek 19. He will be on the autograph card (meaning one free autograph), and will be doing a meet-and-greet. Details should be on the website shortly.
With today being such a nice day, I decided to go to Bakka this afternoon. (For non-Torontonians, that's our SF bookstore.) Their old location was extremely convenient but they moved a couple of months ago to another location that requires a subway ride and a streetcar ride to get to, so it took me about an hour to get there. The person who works there whom I'd been hoping to talk to wasn't in today, but I chatted for a bit with the young woman behind the counter anyway. It turns out she's one of the TT panelists whose signups haven't come into us... *headdesk* She had some good ideas for the Literature and Writing tracks, so I asked her to send them along. (Yes,
artifuss, I know Writing is currently over quota... but this is a really good idea, about the difficulties genre writers face in getting government grants compared to non-genre writers. She has a really funny spin on it, too. I think we might be able to do some juggling.)
After that trip, I decided to walk up to Dundas and take the streetcar there instead of taking the Queen streetcar, in the hopes that it would get me to the subway faster (there's usually less traffic on Dundas) and that I'd get a seat (fewer people, too). That would have worked out fine had I not had to wait about 20 minutes for the bloody thing. (Fewer streetcars on that route, I suppose.)
En route, the streetcar passed the Art Gallery Of Ontario and the Ontario College Of Art & Design building called the "Rosalie Sharp Pavillion." That gave me a chuckle, because I know Rosalie. Rich enough to own her own colour, but she looks like she dresses in the dark. (Lovely lady, though. Her husband is great too. Not the greatest bridge players in the world, but they're very nice. And did I mention rich? I wonder if I could get them to adopt me. Though I'd probably have to convert to Judaism.)
When I finally got to Yonge and Dundas, I remembered that a friend works in the TO-Tix booth in Dundas Square, so I thought I'd walk over and say hi. He was serving customers, but once they were gone, and there were no other customers around, he came out (not literally; I think he was already out ;) ) and we chatted for about half an hour (and checked out the hot guys; well, he was checking out the hot anybodies. Dang bisexuals. :P ). I may try to find some time to go to karaoke with him on a weekend some time, as he often goes to a karaoke bar downtown. I'm also trying to recruit him onto the Gaylaxicon concom, but he's still thinking about that. (Actually, he thought that was why I'd come by - his first words were "I know I haven't answered your email. I keep thinking that I should, if only to tell you that I haven't made up my mind yet.")
I got home around 5 to discover that I'd missed a phone call from a young acquaintance of mine who's been having some parental problems at home. Actually, he's no longer at home; he's been sleeping on friends' couches. I don't know where he is now. He said he'd call back later, but he hasn't yet. I have a cell phone number for him, but in his message he said he couldn't be reached.
The rest of today so far has been spent emailing and watching Doctor Who over dinner. Tonight's episode was good, if a bit of an old story. (I don't know if it's old for Doctor Who, admittedly.) It was fun because Charles Dickens was one of the characters the Doctor and Rose met; I didn't catch some of the first few scenes because being out all day meant I didn't start dinner until about 7:30, so I'm not clear on how the Doctor explained who he was. It seems that Dickens had something of an understanding that the Doctor was from another planet and from outside time, though, so I'm assuming that an explanation was given.
I had a funny thought while watching the episode; one of the aliens used the phrase "time war" at one point. I assume this refers to the war that the Doctor referred to last week, which killed all the other Time Lords... but what if Future Guy from Enterprise was a Time Lord? Interesting idea for a fanfic...
redeem147, want to take a shot at it? ;)
