Yup, the bowling icon is back...

The 2008-09 bowling season started this evening. I had thought about skipping this evening as I'm feeling under the weather. It's probably post-con plague - I feel achy all over, woke up this morning with a bit of a sore throat and it hurts to walk in a different way than it hurt last Sunday and Monday. I hope I'm not coming down with the flu. (All together now: "Funny, you don't look Fluish!") But I suppose that's what happens when you're hugging and kissing several dozen people over the course of a few days...
However, by the time I had to leave work if I was going to get there on time, I felt marginally better, and I did want to see everyone as I don't think I saw anyone from the league all summer. (Well, I may have bumped into Troy once at Woody's, but he bowls Wednesdays, so he doesn't count.)
They'd remodelled the bowling alley extensively over the summer - everything from the bathrooms to the lanes themselves are new. These lanes are synthetic rather than wood, which makes a huge difference in the way the ball behaves - people who throw a straight ball do better. Since I throw a very mild hook, I did pretty well, though I had trouble with sparing the corners - I'm used to my ball hooking and riding the edge of the gutter. It doesn't do that any more, so I have to relearn how to get those spares. Fortunately, tonight, the vast majority of my spares involved the 5-pin or the 5-8 combination - I only had two 6-10s and one 4-7 (all of which I missed :( ).
But overall, I had a good night to start the season: 200, 146, 161. That third game could have been marginally higher had I not thrown my last ball away. :( But having four strikes in a row in the first game was nice.
h8torun isn't bowling this year, and Randy is only going to be a spare from time to time, and Bridgette has changed teams. Matthew, who filled in for Randy during last season's playoffs, was going to join us this year but seems to have changed his mind. When Mario learned this, he said, "Good!" I said, "I thought you liked him?" Mario responded, "He always started well, but by the third game he could barely stand." Okay, I'll grant that. Just because one can perform an activity while drinking to excess, that doesn't mean that one should perform said activity while drinking to excess. Besides, I'm not sure I want to spend an entire year watching him flirt with, and drape himself over, everyone except me...
Two of our new teammates were there tonight, though, and they seem nice.
Exhausted now. I may be in bed before 1... and on a Friday night, that's nearly unthinkable.

Date: 2008-09-07 05:52 am (UTC)I'm feeling better today, actually, though my nose is still a bit stuffy. I went downtown to our SF bookstore this afternoon, and managed to walk about two miles back to the subway afterwards. (I didn't feel like waiting for a streetcar, and traffic was a bit crazy in that area because of the Toronto International Film Festival - I saw two red carpet setups on the streetcar trip over to the store.)
I wouldn't have been able to do that if it had been the flu, because it would have hurt too much, so I suspect it's just a cold.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy some chicken soup, though. :)
